What to Know About The Lead Paint Law

Did you know that lead paint is the only federally mandated disclosure when selling a home? It’s true and that should tell you something about understanding the importance of selling and buying a home with lead paint.

Lead paint was banned in homes back in the 70’s. The disclosure law says that you must disclose your knowledge of the presence of lead paint on any home built prior to 1978.

Real Estate agents, buyers and sellers all need to have a basic grasp of the lead paint law. What happens when you don’t understand the lead law? You make bad mistakes that could come back to bite you in the fanny!

When selling a house there is a form you will need to fill out when your home was built before 1978. The form will detail what you know and don’t know about the presence of lead paint. If you have had your home tested for lead paint this needs to be disclosed. Of course, the results of the test should also be made readily available.
