HOW TO EFFECTIVELY IMPLEMENT BLASTING IN YOUR MINE

The business of extracting valuable  mineral resources that are deeply embedded in the earth’s crust require technical expertise. Technical expertise that are used in the mining industry for successful displacement of valuable minerals from rocks follow well defined processes. Professional application of all mining processes is a non-negotiable requirement for profitable mineral extraction from rocks. Poor implementation of any of the processes always results in inefficiencies  and losses. 

Successful dislodging processes require heavy duty machinery and equipment. However, to simplify the work and reduce the cost of mining operations, blasting is used to dislodge minerals from the natural rocks. With a very good understanding of rocks and blasting methods, dislodgement can be effectively implemented.

Having risen to become a routine work in virtually all mining sites, blasting has completely changed the scope of mining operations the world over.

For a company to effectively implement a successful blast, it must comply with the underlisted processes religiously.

Blast Hole Drilling

It is very important for a blast hole to be accurately drilled. To do this, the blast hole design and their locations must be properly determined. Drilling rigs should then be used to drill the holes after which the driller should communicate with the blaster so as to furnish him with any geological conditions of concern that were encountered during the drilling process. This information can guide the blaster in using the most appropriate method in loading the hole with detonators.

Loading Explosives into Blast Holes

After the holes have been drilled and their geological conditions are known to the loader, the next step is to properly load the holes with detonators. Detonators serve as primary tools that are used to break rocks. They have timing periods that are key for effective breakage and prevention of  offsite effects.

In loading the holes with detonators, the holes should not be completely filled up. Some amount of space should be left at the top of the hole so that inert materials called stemming can be used to fill it up. The importance of filling the space with the stemming is that it prevents the energy released by the detonation from leaving the confines of the blast hole and ensures that the blast energy is focused horizontally.

Connecting The Explosives

There are three types of detonators used in mining operations. Each has its own unique characteristic that makes it suitable depending on the type of blasting project that needs to be executed.

After blast holes have been loaded with the specific type of detonator suitable for the specific blasting project, they should then be connected together. 

Securing the Blast Area

Before detonating the explosives, The blaster should ensure that the defined area where the blasting is going to take place is fully secured and clear. This he does by indicating clearly landmarks where that no person should be. The land marks should be communicated to all workers and where present, a siren warning should be sounded minutes before the explosives will be detonated.

Detonating the Blast

After ensuring that the area is safe and clear, the explosives are detonated. The blast operator should then crosscheck to examine if the detonation yielded the needed result. If this is confirmed, he can then give a final signal for excavation process to begin.
